I discovered this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson more than 15 years ago while working on my Niederbipp Trilogy, and filed it away in the card catalog of my brain to marinate for a while. It reads, “Infancy is the perpetual Messiah which comes into the arms of fallen men and pleads with them to return to paradise.” I love the simplicity of this beautiful truth. The Savior of the world arrived as a child—an innocent and helpless infant, and he became the Savior over the course of lifetime, teaching us all to love and serve and heal.
The Holy Family, depicted here, are the only human witnesses to the glorious events of that first Christmas Eve, but the witnessing animals remind us of how truly humble were Jesus’s beginnings. The trumpeting angel, however, symbolizes the infinite promise of this baby boy who was born to be the King of kings. Anyone who has ever held an infant in her arms has been met with some understanding of the eternal potential of mankind. Perhaps never was this more apparent than on that first Noel. Merry Christmas!
